Gong Dao'an, former vice mayor of Shanghai and director of the municipal public security bureau, has been expelled from the Communist Party of China (CPC) and removed from public office for serious violations of Party discipline and laws, China's top anti-graft body announced Wednesday.

The announcement by the CPC Central Commission for Discipline Inspection and the National Supervisory Commission came after an investigation by authorities into Gong's case.

Gong, having abandoned his ideals and convictions, had attempted to build cliques within the Party, which caused serious harm to and had bad influences on the political environment, according to the announcement.

Gong was found to have abused his powers and sought benefit for others in the appointment of officials, business operation and construction project contracting, and engaged in profit-generating activities against regulations, said the announcement.

Gong has seriously violated the Party's political discipline and rules and is suspected of taking bribes, said the anti-graft body, adding that he showed no sign of restraint even after the 18th CPC National Congress.

Gong's illicit gains will be confiscated and his case will be transferred to the procuratorate for criminal investigation and prosecution, said the announcement.
