Authorities aim to better regulate online economy
Chinese authorities have officially opened an anti-monopoly probe into e-commerce giant Alibaba Group and will summon its affiliate Ant Group for a meeting about financial regulations, the latest moves to strengthen antitrust practices and prevention of the "disorderly expansion of capital".""
The State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR) has launched an investigation into Alibaba for alleged monopolistic conduct, including implementing an "exclusive dealing agreement".""
The issue largely refers to the company's practice of forcing merchants to choose either Alibaba's platform or its rival site to sell their products instead of being eligible to work with both, potentially crowding out competitors.


China to Adjust Import Tariff Rates on Some Products Next Year202111
On 23 December 2020, the Customs Tariff Commission of the State Council issued a circular, saying that from January 1, 2021 China will adjust the most favored nation tariff rates, conventional tariff rates and provisional tariff rates for some import products.20201223202111
From 1 January 2021China will adopt provisional tariff rates on 883 import products, and rates are lower than the most favored nation tariff rates. Cancer drugs and materials for making rare disease medicines will be tax-free when they are imported to China; import tariffs on heart valve prosthesis and hearing aid will also be reduced. China will scrap provisional tariff rates on solid waste imports and resume the most favored nation tariff rates.From July 1, 2021 China will trim the most favored tariff rates on 176 information technology products.202111883202171176

Ban on Nonbiodegradable Plastic Products
Hainan province has made a bold move to ban the use, sale and production of single-use nonbiodegradable plastic products on 1 Dec 2020, making it the nation's first to implement the strictest rules to curb plastic and promote green living.2020121
The first batch of items banned includes single-use plastic shopping bags, bowls and cups for takeout, drinking straws, forks and other products made from nonbiodegradable polymers.
Other regions in China have also enhanced control on the use and production of plastic products. For example, Shanghai will ban supermarkets from offering plastic bags to customers starting from Jan 1, 2021.202111 \n
